About us…
Panama Andy’s is based in New York City, with chapters in Brooklyn and Gorgona, Panama.
The Gorgona chapter began in 2017 as a small rescue focused mainly on stray dogs, but has expanded significantly in its first five years, and now includes many rescued cats. In addition to providing food and shelter to stray dogs and cats, our dedicated staff and volunteers work with the community to provide veterinary care and food to local families with financial needs. To date we have rescued dozens of strays, found forever homes for many of them, and helped facilitate the spaying and neutering of hundreds more.
The Brooklyn chapter is our newest endeavor. Launched in early 2020, it is focused on serving the feral cat population of Brooklyn and the surrounding areas. In a short period of time we have rescued over 20 cats and kittens, and found forever homes for many of them. We built several heated shelters on the property which is now home to a large feral cat colony, and hope to build many more shelters throughout the borough. Our primary focus will be cutting down on the feral cat population by engaging in a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) program, which involves trapping feral cats, getting them spayed or neutered, then releasing them back into the neighborhood shelters we have built, where they will be fed and monitored. Any rescued kittens will receive veterinary care, food, shelter and will be put up for adoption.
ANDY’S STORY…
Tom and Kim live in New York, but spent their winters in Gorgona every year from 2007 until 2019. While they were there, they’d spend a lot of time heading down to the beach to feed the numerous stray dogs who hung out by the fishing boats. These dogs were often malnourished and afflicted with mange and parasites. They lacked proper vet care and most were not yet spayed or neutered, which led to a new generation of strays every six months.
In March of 2016, they met a sweet dog they decided to name “Panama Andy”. He was in very bad shape; covered in mange, thin, sickly, no doubt infested with parasites. They decided that they had to do something more than feed these dogs for a few weeks every time they visited. It was at that moment the idea for the creation of an actual dog rescue operation was born.
With the help of Patricia Salas, a devout animal lover, who they met feeding dogs on the beach, they were able to capture Andy and bring him to the local vet for treatment. A year later, they found a good property to rent, and the rescue was born. Panama Andy has lived at the rescue since its inception.
